Lune Transitional and Coastal (TraC) Pollution Study

Client: Lune Rivers Trust

Location: Lancaster

The Lune Rivers Trust engaged Ribble Rivers to aid in the delivery of a study in to pollution entering the River Lune directly or through its tributaries between Skerton Bridge and the M6 motorway bridge. The wider project was in conjunction with the Environment Agency and aimed to determine the levels of pollution in the Transitional and Coastal waterbodies of Morecambe Bay, and identify possible solutions for dealing with pollution coming from this target area.

Ribble Rivers worked together with Wetland Engineering to undertake an investigation that comprised a desktop study using existing data, and walkover surveys to identify pollution sources and areas where there was the potential to utilise Sustainable Drainage Systems (SuDS) to mitigate pollution inputs. Potential SuDS solutions were then suggested and prioritised based on feasibility, potential scale of impact, cost:benefit, and by levels of pollution determined by water quality sampling undertaken by the Lune Rivers Trust.
